JT collecting Connected Britain award

JT wins major national award for ground-breaking full-fibre network

JT has been recognised at the Connected Britain Awards, announced at the end of the UK’s premier conference on communications technology this week. The Channel Islands’ largest and only locally owned telecoms operator won the Fibre Connectivity Award for its pioneering Gigabit full-fibre network.

In winning the award, JT was recognised above some significant other shortlisted organisations involved in fibre technology, including Digital Scotland, Gigaclear and Grosvenor Group.

The organisers, Total Telecom, described this win as:

Fibre Connectivity Award: This was another tightly contested category, and one that carried a good deal of prestige, given the UK’s renewed focus on fibre networks. JT Group claimed victory in this category with their ambitious project on the island of Jersey (more information here).

This award is timely as this year Jersey will become the world’s first full-fibre jurisdiction, with every residential and business broadband customer directly connected to a network that offers unrivalled internet upload and download speeds. This achievement was rewarded by the judges, who praised JT’s foresight and commended the way the project was managed and delivered.

JT Chief Executive Officer Graeme Millar, who accepted the award in London, said: “We’re clearly delighted that our Gigabit project has been singled out at such a prestigious event. Choosing to replace our copper network with a full-fibre one back in 2012 was a bold decision to make; however, we’ve always known that it was the right one and it’s obviously pleasing to now receive national recognition for our efforts. JT started the journey of rolling out our network years in advance of the point at which it would be required and we’re now at a place where many other jurisdictions want to be.

“We’ve laid over 3,000 km of individual fibre-optic cable to almost 40,000 homes and 5,000 businesses. With 100 per cent of broadband customers soon to be connected to full-fibre, Jersey will have the highest fibre-to-the-home penetration in the world. That is something the whole Island can be proud of.

“Our success at the Connected Britain Awards is down to the cumulative effort of a huge team of people and I would like to publicly thank my colleagues and all our stakeholders for their enduring hard work and support, as well as the support of our customers, whose needs were central to the vision of this project.”

New JT Fan Zone to create festival atmosphere at Super League Triathlon

JT – the official Technology Partner of September’s Super League Triathlon in Jersey is expanding its support this year to bring a wide selection of entertainment, food and games to the world-class event; for local islanders and visitors alike.

Building on the huge success last year – when JT provided technical support, mobile communications and full-fibre internet access to the broadcast team and race organisers – JT are helping make the weekend of 28-30 September even more of a community event. The FREE JT Fan Zone will be based on the lawn above the Waterfront car park and will include three days of free music, catering from Jersey suppliers, a Tech Zone with games to play, and an activity-filled Kids’ Zone, all free for islanders to enjoy.

The weekend of intense competition will be televised and streamed around the globe. Last year, it attracted a worldwide audience of 375 million people in 147 markets. The live streaming and social media coverage were possible thanks to the strength of JT’s full-fibre and mobile network helping power the event. By this September, Jersey will be the first jurisdiction in the world to have every residential broadband property directly connected to fibre and this event is the ideal opportunity to celebrate that achievement.

Tamara O’Brien, Head of Customer Experience at JT, said: “A Super League needs a super-fast network to support it and I’m delighted that JT is, once again, the official Technology Partner providing support for this exciting event. As the event grows so does our involvement, and we’re proud to be giving something back to Islanders through the new JT Fan Zone. The event is also a great occasion to showcase our 100 per cent full-fibre network to the world. Like the Super League Triathlon, it really puts Jersey on the map and as the island’s only locally owner provider we’re very proud to be even more involved in this event.”

Super League Triathlon Chief Executive Officer Michael D’Hulst said: “Last year was a great success so we’re delighted to be returning to Jersey. We want as many Islanders as possible to come down to see the action, so I’m thrilled that JT is making the weekend even more of an event for everyone.”

Cellusys IOT — Paul Bullock, Head of IoT at JT

IoT security innovation delivered by JT and Cellusys IOT showcased at GSMA conference

JT and Cellusys IOT will further strengthen their new partnership at the next major global conference on mobile privacy and security later this month.

The Jersey-based telecoms operator, which has developed an IoT and M2M SIM card that provides total and seamless connectivity whatever network is used, formed an alliance with Dublin-based Cellusys IOT in February to enable enterprise customers of JT to view and manage their cellular connectivity security via an IoT security dashboard. Both partners will be showcasing the new enhanced security dashboard solution at the GSMA Mobile 360 Privacy and Security conference, being held in The Hague on 30 and 31 of May.

Paul Bullock, JT’s Head of IoT, said: “With the growing number of IoT devices worldwide, the security risks for enterprises and consumers is increasing, including information being stolen, devices being made dormant, the theft of personal identity and even remote car hacking. These are often initiated by hackers via network-based signalling attacks, air-interface hacking, and DDoS attacks, which continue to grow in size and frequency. These attacks are often not visible for enterprise customers, since they happen in the controlled environment of the telecom provider and not in a customer’s IP network.

“Through our partnership with Cellusys IoT, we are offering enhanced security solutions via a security dashboard that enable customers to manage their own safety. Alarms can be triggered in case of attacks and enhanced security filters can be applied, specific to each use-case. For the first time, signalling security is made available for enterprise customers who need full visibility and management capability over the security of their IoT devices.”

Gerrit Jan Konijnenberg, Chief Executive Officer of Cellusys IOT, said: “We’re delighted to continue to partner with JT  showcasing an excellent working relationship at this significant event. The GSMA’s Mobile 360 Privacy and Security conference cultivates regional engagement through topics that are impacting the mobile industry on a global and local level. As security becomes more important in the IoT space, we think we have an important story to tell and this is an ideal platform to tell it.”

Growth and connectivity combine for a very strong year at JT

JT has today published its Annual Review for 2017, showing an increase in turnover of 41% from £185m to £261m, creating an operating profit for the year of a little over £11m.

The significant increase in JT’s turnover in 2017 mainly comes from growth in its International business, with the Group now signing up more than 1,600,000 mobile devices around the world, connecting equipment from heart monitors to payment systems, ‘smart’ traffic lights, solar farms and livestock trackers.

70% of JT’s revenue now comes from outside of Jersey – which then supports JT’s investment in local infrastructure, such as its 4G and island-wide full-fibre networks.

During 2017, JT connected another 11,000 broadband customers to that full-fibre network, with the total as of today now reaching 38,700, with the very small number remaining being connected by the summer. That achievement will make Jersey the most connected place in the world, in terms of the percentage of its broadband customers connect to a full-fibre network.

JT’s Chairman Phil Male commented:

“Since I joined the JT board as a non-executive director seven years ago, it has been immensely satisfying to see the company evolve from a locally-focused telecoms operator into a global business.

“JT SIMs now power more than 1,600,000 devices worldwide, taking advantage of JT’s 750 roaming agreements with other mobile network operators.

“We are also enabling a number of ‘world first’ innovations in Jersey. Due to the island’s ‘manageable’ size, existing mast network and diversity of terrain, we are fast becoming an ideal ‘sandbox’ for innovation, and global giant Sony has recently chosen the island and JT to test its technology.

“Technology is always changing but JT is an innovative business that is passionate about connecting our islands.”

JT’s CEO Graeme Millar added:

“2017 was a year of strong growth for the JT Group, particularly for our International division, whose success helps to support our activities here in the Channel Islands.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my team for their hard work and commitment, which has helped us to greater commercial success, while also focusing tightly on our customer service. We know we can always do better, however I believe that in 2017 we implemented a number of measures which our customers are finding really helpful, such as our exclusive free MyAccount app and Live Chat facilities, alongside leading the market by reducing data roaming rates by 95%.

“Following the same accolade in 2016, 2017 once again saw our 4G mobile network confirmed by Ookla – the globally recognised leader in internet performance testing – as the fastest in the Channel Islands; and we reached our targets for connecting broadband customers to high-speed fibre optic cabling.

“Significant investment in our Channel Island networks has made the Islands one of the best-connected places in the world; I’m really looking forward to seeing our customers using those networks both at work and at home, to really make the most of the digital opportunities which are available.

“It’s a tremendously exciting time, and JT’s role is enabling the Channel Islands to be right at the heart of it.”

JT short-listed at Connected Britain for national digital awards

JT has been short-listed for three of the nine prestigious awards on offer at the 2018 Connected Britain Awards. Connected Britain is an annual conference and the premier meeting place for the UK’s main stakeholders to come together and discuss, learn and collaborate on the UK’s digital future.

The conference, which will be held in London on 19-20 June, hosts leading names from the digital sector, including national and local government, global telecoms operators, regulators and investors.

The associated Connected Britain Awards have short-listed JT in the Fibre Connectivity, Superfast and IoT award categories alongside national and global brands and operators. The first two relate to JT’s full-fibre network in Jersey, which is more prominent than ever given this year as Jersey will become the world’s first full-fibre island, with each household and business directly connected to JT’s full-fibre; a huge digital accolade for Jersey as an island placing it well ahead of the UK and many places in the world.

The IoT shortlisting recognises JT’s success in connecting devices that communicate automatically within the ‘Internet of Things’. JT SIMs now power more than 1,600,000 devices worldwide, taking advantage of JT’s 750 roaming agreements with other mobile network operators, offering an innovative and resilient service.

JT Chief Executive Officer Graeme Millar said: “We’re clearly delighted to be nominated for these prestigious national awards. With almost 40,000 homes and businesses on the full-fibre network, Jersey will soon be the first jurisdiction in the world to have 100 per cent of broadband premises connected directly to full-fibre. We’re immensely proud of that achievement and it is testament to the effort and ambition of all our stakeholders, the support of our business and residential customers, the fantastic team at JT, our suppliers, and the States of Jersey.

“Our work in the IoT space is also ground-breaking and I’m humbled that Connected Britain have also recognised our innovation in this growing space, which brings economic prosperity back to our islands.

New Chair appointed at JT

JT Group has today announced that one of the UK’s leading technologists, Phil Male, has succeeded John Stares as its Chair. Mr Stares stood down at the end of March, after completing five years in the Chair role, and ten years on the Group Board.

Mr Male has been a non-executive director of JT since 2011, and previously chaired the Group’s nomination committee, as well as sitting on its audit and remuneration committees. He has been at the forefront of the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications sector for almost 30 years, founded two successful start-ups, completed two listings on the London Stock Exchange, and held executive roles at some of the sector’s leading firms, including Demon Internet, The Press Association, Scottish Telecom, THUS, and Cable&Wireless.

Since 2015, Mr Male has worked with investment houses across Europe specialising in telecoms and technology and sat on numerous boards including Virtual1, Kondor, JANet Commercial and The Data Communications Company. He is also a non-executive director of Comic Relief and a guest lecturer at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.

Mr Male said: “One of the things that originally attracted me to JT was the ambitious aim of turning Jersey into one of the most connected places on the planet. The importance of the full-fibre network in Jersey should not be underestimated – it is a social and economic enabler in a world that is only becoming more digital, a truly world-class platform, something that both JT and Jersey should be proud of – it has been a privilege to be part of the story so far.

“I know more than most that the success JT enjoys is down to the hard work put in around the clock by the fantastic teams across the business both on and off the island. I’m pleased that JT is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of talent through our apprentice, bursary and graduate programmes – programmes I’m personally committed to developing further.”

Graeme Millar, Chief Executive Officer of JT, said: “Phil becomes Chairman at an exciting time for JT, as we deliver on our promise to be ‘always on, always there and always enabling.’ We now have a clear structure in place to develop both locally and internationally, bringing new products and services to a growing global audience while never losing sight of our Channel Island home.

“Growing revenue outside of Jersey and Guernsey has allowed us to invest in our local networks, not least our ambitious full-fibre project in Jersey, which will be completed very soon. Phil’s guidance will be invaluable to me and the executive team at this strategically important time for the business.”

Tony Moretta, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Jersey, said: “Phil is an acknowledged global expert in the digital and telecoms sector, not least through his position as a Cambridge lecturer and his involvement with The Data Communications Company. To have someone of his gravitas lead JT is a serious feather in the cap for Jersey.”

JT and La Collette flats make communications history in Jersey

La Collette has made history by being the first part of the Island to remove the copper network in its entirety; paving the way for a full-fibre future.

The area’s network of copper wires and cabinets – which has served the community reliably for decades – has now been removed. In its place is a full-fibre network, capable of meeting the demands of today’s residents and businesses, who increasingly rely on products and services delivered digitally.

The switchover has been carried out by JT in partnership with Andium Homes, which has recently replaced 59 homes at La Collette with 147 new builds that meet the UK Decent Homes Standard, a benchmark of quality and efficiency.

Daragh McDermott, JT’s Director of Corporate Affairs, said: “As part of their plans for redevelopment, Andium Homes approached us to ask how we might be able to move our copper cables and cabinets from the area. We took the opportunity to move all customer services onto our new, full-fibre network, given that the copper network is being switched off Island-wide.

“The result will be new, modern housing connected to a full-fibre network that is capable of delivering the highest broadband quality and speeds available anywhere in the world.”
Mike Porter, Andium Homes’ Head of Operations, said: “It has been fantastic to work with JT on this project.

The demolition and rebuild is all about giving our residents homes that are fit for the future, which is exactly what JT is doing in communications. The arrival of fibre is great news for our own residents as well as the wider community.”

The removal of copper services and equipment from La Collette is the start of a phased project that will continue throughout 2018 as the remaining properties on the old network are moved onto JT’s full-fibre network across the Island.
