FAQs
Will customers have to pay more for 5G?
No, we have invested heavily in our Network Investment Programme to ensure our customers have access to the latest technology as standard.
Will my current device support 5G?
5G enabled phones have been available since 2019, so if you bought a new phone since then, the likelihood is you’ll be ready for 5G.
If you’re unsure, we recommend verifying your phone’s 5G compatibility by searching online for its make and model to review its specifications.
There are also a number online sites, such as GSMA arena that can help you. Click here
When will 3G be switched off?
As 5G becomes available in each area, our 3G network will be switched-off simultaneously.
If you have an old device it's best to check that it’s compatible with our 4G/5G networks.
If it isn’t, it will still connect to our 2G network, but you won’t have access to data services.
If you only use your device to send texts and make calls this will continue, but you’ll get a better, seamless connection by switching to a phone that is 4G/5G enabled. More information is available at www.jtglobal.com/3gswitchoff

Will it improve my mobile coverage indoors?
5G is more than just faster speeds. It's an enabler for future technologies. Later in the year manufacturers will be releasing Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) across their 5G-enabled handsets. What this means is that, if you have JT broadband at home, then your mobile calls can be made over the fixed broadband network, vastly improving call quality. This is particularly important for homes with thick granite walls, which may have had problems connecting to a mobile mast in the past.
What are the benefits of 5G?
5G is the next-generation of mobile connectivity. For those customers with 5G-enabled devices, it will provide greater upload and download speeds and improved coverage, capacity, security and latency.
Faster speeds mean you can download movies and box sets in seconds rather than minutes, stream live sports on-the-go and you can play games and stream videos without lag.
Improved coverage, capacity and latency means, you’ll get an overall better user experience, particularly in crowded places or remote rural locations.

How does 5G differ from 4G?
Mobile network technology is continually evolving. We’ve moved from 1G to 2G and 3G to 4G, each faster than the previous version, enabling you to do more things with your phone.
5G is not a replacement for 4G, it will work alongside our 4G network and your phone will use both to keep you connected wherever you are.

Does 5G use more data?
5G doesn't use more data than 4G, but because download and upload speeds are much quicker and the connection is instant, you might find yourself doing more things that use data. With mobile data use growing exponentially year-on-year, we’ve created ‘Unlimited’ mobile data packages to keep our customers covered. To find out more visit www.jtglobal.com/plans
Is 5G safe?
5G technology is highly regulated and we work within strict guidelines. 5G uses radio waves, these radio waves have been used for mobile and Wi-Fi networks for decades. They have been tested and there is no evidence of harmful effects.
Radio waves are ‘non-ionising’ which means they don’t have the energy to change the structure of a cell. In contrast, X-rays and gamma rays are ionising, which is why there are lots of precautions when you have an X-ray.

My 5G speed doesn’t compare to the predicted download speeds you indicate on the above cluster map
There are many variables involved in the speeds you receive, some of these include the capability and limitations of the device you are on, your proximity to the 5G mast and the number of other users and devices connected to the mast at the same time. The predicted speeds mentioned above are an average speed predicted, but you may see lower or higher download speeds based on some of the things mentioned.
