The Jersey Better Business Grant is reopening, giving Jersey-based businesses financial headroom to address long-standing legacy infrastructure issues.
With up to 50% matched funding available, this grant lets you catch up on IT upgrades you may have delayed for years, without having to cover the full cost out of pocket.
JT can help you make the most of this initiative by modernising your infrastructure with managed cloud services and other practical solutions.
What can the Jersey Better Business Grant be used for?
The Better Business Grant is part of a £20 million support package from the Government of Jersey to help employers adjust to rising wage expectations and bring their core technologies up to date.
Of this amount, £5.3 million has been earmarked specifically for productivity-enhancing improvements. This includes future-proofing digital environments via:
- Cloud migration
- Network and storage upgrades
- Cybersecurity improvements
- Collaboration systems
- Staff training for new platforms and workflows
You could recoup 50% of the total cost of IT projects that meet grant criteria.
Who can apply for the Jersey Better Business Grant?
Businesses of all sizes can apply for funding. You may be eligible if your company:
- is registered in Jersey and holds a valid business licence,
- has been trading for at least six months,
- currently employs at least one person (in addition to the owner/s) earning at least £128 per week,
- and is up to date with tax obligations or is on an approved repayment plan.
Businesses that have been trading for more than 18 months can apply for a major grant, ranging from £5,000 to £75,000. If you are a younger business and have only been trading for more than 6 months, you may be eligible for a minor grant between £1,000 and £5,000.
Are you a part of the visitor economy? A dedicated stream is available under the Visitor Economy Development Grant. Your business must derive a significant portion of its revenue from tourism- or visitor-driven sectors to qualify.
Use this eligibility checker on the Jersey Business website to get a quick yes/no before applying.
Can the Better Business Grant be used to fund cloud migration projects?
Cloud migration is one of the most effective ways to use Better Business Grant funding, as it addresses two priorities: modernisation and protection.
It replaces high-maintenance legacy systems with cloud infrastructure that can grow with your needs. Because updates and patches are applied automatically, your systems are harder to breach, even if you’re not actively managing security day-to-day.
How managed cloud services can help your business modernise
If you are interested in applying for a cloud migration grant, JT can help. We can structure your project to match funding guidelines and take it from planning through delivery.
Our managed cloud services make it easy to rehost critical workloads. As a local provider, we know how to build around Jersey’s data laws and understand the compliance pressures faced by regulated firms based here.
Here are just a few ways JT can help you accelerate your cloud migration.
Azure Stack Hub
Do you want the benefits of cloud without offshoring your data? JT’s Azure Stack Hub platform is operated and supported locally from SOC 2, ISO27001, and PCI-DSS certified Channel Islands data centres, giving you Azure services with on-island data residency.
We support local-only and hybrid Azure deployments, using the same pay-as-you-go model and Azure-native tools as the public cloud. This makes it well-suited to regulated industries, like finance and eGaming, with infrastructure designed to meet local compliance and AGCC requirements.
You get the flexibility of Azure, combined with stronger data sovereignty, local operational control, and the option to integrate with the Azure public cloud when needed.
Plus, our expert team keeps the platform up to date and maintained — just as you’d expect from Microsoft — so you don’t have to manage the underlying hardware.
JT Data Hosting
Our primary data centres are based in the Channel Islands and run 24/7 with full support.
They are:
- certified to SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, and PCI-DSS standards,
- built up to Tier 3 specifications,
- and hold a cloud hosting licence from the Alderney Gambling Control Commission.
JT Cloud Backup
Tired of piecing together a recovery setup from different tools? Our fully managed cloud backup service — delivered with Ekco — keeps your data safe across all your devices/endpoints through a single secure platform. It’s agentless and encrypted, making it easy to scale and harder to misconfigure.
The system includes built-in compliance features. You can easily view and manage your backups through a simple dashboard and choose what to recover (and when), rather than being locked into a rigid restore process.
How do you prepare your application?
Ready to apply for the Jersey Better Business Grant? Here are the key steps to take for your application.
Before you apply:
- Jersey Business recommends using their productivity scorecard to determine which parts of your business need improvement.
- Are you still running local file servers or relying on ageing hardware? Are you still patching devices manually or relying on VPNs that drop out mid-session? Flag those issues. These are precisely the types of problems the grant is designed to address.
- Don’t forget: the grant also funds training. Does your team need upskilling to work in a cloud environment or improve cybersecurity practices? Include that in your proposal.
When you’re ready to apply:
- Confirm that your business is eligible.
- Download the forms from the Jersey Business website.
- Write a clear, specific plan that explains how your project will improve operations.
