Gigabit drawing global interest

Jersey’s investment in the Gigabit Jersey project is helping to draw new businesses and innovators to the Island from around the world, says JT Chief Relationship officer Tim Ringsdore.

In the last few weeks Mr Ringsdore has recently attended industry trade shows and forums in Silicon Valley, Israel and Turkey.  Mr Ringsdore said that the on-going high-speed fibre optic broadband project is already significantly interesting to foreign investors and companies looking to expand into Europe.

Israeli security specialists Security DAM have already used JT’s testing facility – JT Lab – to try out new DDoS protection software and have already launched their world class cyber-attack defense system into the European market from Jersey.

Mr Ringsdore, has just returned from the DLD conference in Israel, along with a Locate Jersey delegation who together were there to position Jersey as the jurisdiction of choice if you want to do business in Europe.  He said: ‘The ubiquitous fibre network is a very attractive in terms of bringing new business to the Island and it is something that provokes and inspires interest everywhere that we go.

‘We know from talking to colleagues at Locate Jersey that it has been a large part of bringing not just high net worth individuals to the Island, but also that companies are reassured by the speed and security of our broadband connections to the UK and the rest of Europe.

‘In the last few weeks we have been talking to people in the US, Israel and Turkey and in every case, the capacity of the new Gigabit Jersey network is something that is a major focus of interest, particularly in the tech and online industries.’

The Israel trip with Locate Jersey followed JT’s attendance at the TC3 conference in Silicon Valley and a Fibre-to-the-Home Council event in Istanbul – the FTTH Council named JT as ‘Operator of the Year’ at their annual conference in February this year.

JT recently announced that it had reached the significant milestone of having connected 5,000 homes to the fibre network, and that it is on target to complete the Gigabit Jersey by the end of 2016. So far, JT has laid 800 km of fibre optic cable and is connecting more than 100 new homes to the fibre network each week.

JT and Channel islands join IEEE global cloud computing lab

JT has been asked to become a founding member of the IEEE Intercloud Testbed Project which is developing technical standards for Cloud computing. JT, based in the Channel Islands, 100 miles off the south coast of England, will form part of a global lab alongside AT & T and the Orange Group, France Telecom SA to find a solution allowing the fast developing cloud system to federate and interoperate.

At present cloud systems are unable to inter-operate, which will have far reaching consequences in the future. The IEEE (Institute of Electrical Engineers) Intercloud Testbed Project is aiming to provide a solution to this problem. It will create technical standards for inter-operability and allow the ‘Intercloud’ to become a commercial reality.

The ‘Cloud of clouds’ will mostly operationalize on members’ equipment and networks, but a reference Intercloud Root and Exchange is being set up in Telx Santa Clara allowing carrier neutral, rich connectivity, and JT will set-up a similar base in the Channel Islands.

The IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative represents the first, broad-based collaborative exercise for cloud computing offered by a global technical professional organisation.

Tim Ringsdore, Chief Relationship Officer at JT, is delighted the company has been asked to become a founding member, ‘This is a major achievement for JT and recognition of how far we have come in being recognized as a global telecoms innovator. It is also coup for the Channel Islands and for our JT Lab initiative and supporting Digital Jersey, who are and independent organisation that represents and promotes Jersey’s digital industries. This proves we are perfectly placed to be able to partner organizations and companies who wish to develop and test innovative products and services within Europe, but outside of the EU, as well as the rest of the world. The IEEE is a world renowned organisation that works to advance technology, which is why we are very proud to be working with them so firmly pacing JT at the forefront of the next internet revolution.’

The IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative will make the results of the research available to anyone. Its aim is to help advance the understanding and use of cloud computing, which is expected to have a significant impact on our information and communications ecosystem. It is also predicted to create 14 million new jobs worldwide.

JT Lab offers a unique testing facility to major global players from the UK and Israel

You wouldn’t expect a telecommunications company from an island measuring just nine-miles-by-five to be connecting 45,000 premises to the fastest ubiquitous fibre network in the western world. You probably wouldn’t expect it to be hosting world-leading global technology innovators at its revolutionary test bed facility either, or to be at the forefront of Machine-to-Machine innovation.

It’s the fact that you wouldn’t expect all of those things from JT that make them possible, because the truth is that there aren’t many Tier 1 telcos like JT. Being small makes us quicker to adapt and innovate – two key factors in the modern telecommunications industry.

JT’s size is one asset; its location is another. Based in the Channel Island of Jersey, off the south coast of England, we are 20 milliseconds away from the UK and mainland Europe – but we’re not bound by UK or EU legislation. The Island is best-known for its world-leading international offshore finance industry, which has spawned a strong professional services sector.

However, it’s the fibre-to-the-home network that makes JT and JT Lab stand out. JT Lab provides companies with the opportunity to test, research, develop and launch products on a real network, with real customers and in real time. It is currently already being used by a world-leading hardware company and a top Israeli internet-security firm who chose to work with us because of our agility– for major global players, arranging testing can take years; our size means that we can make it happen in weeks.

Whatever the future trends and new product/sector innovations may be, JT is perfectly placed for them. Our vision is to become the partner of choice for global telecommunications.  Importantly, we’re experienced at engaging with organisations at the cutting edge of this dynamic industry so, to find out how we can help your organisation visit www.jt-lab.com or www.jtglobal.com

JT Lab partners with World Class Cyber Security Companies to launch DDoS Security solutions and provide a test bed for security software development

JT is pleased to announce the launch of a new Cyber-attack prevention service.
The world-class software has been developed in the JT Lab by SecurityDAM, part of the global RAD Group.

Online security is of worldwide concern and one that Governments, not just companies, are focusing on. US President Barack Obama declared that the ‘Cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation,’ and that, ‘America’s economic prosperity in the 21st Century will depend on Cyber-security.’

DDoS attacks have grown in such complexity, volume and sophistication that 65% of IT security practitioners reporting an average of three DDoS attacks in the past 12 months.

Attacks occur by a vast amount of information being sent via the internet to a targeted website that floods the website or server with requests, which causes it to crash. These attacks have targeted industries such as finance, e-Commerce and Internet Gambling, which can have huge reputational and financial damage for companies.

The new solution will monitor a company’s flow of email, applications and data traffic, and if it detects an unusual change in that flow, will block the malicious requests, but still allow the normal day-to-day traffic through.

‘DDoS prevention is an essential part of a service package offered to business customers’ said Eran Ziv, CEO, SecurityDAM ‘SecurityDAM facilitates the service by providing all the necessary service management elements, including a user-friendly, real-time portal to the end-customer IT manager’

SecurityDAM partnered with JT Lab which was set up by JT, so that innovative, cutting-edge products and services could be tested in Jersey. Tim Ringsdore, Chief Relationship Officer for JT said, ‘This is a fantastic success for JT Lab and for Jersey. To have a new world class solution developed right here in the Island will showcase what we are doing here and the potentials for other companies. It will provide increased revenue not just for JT, but the island as a whole. We are currently in negotiations with several other high-tech organisations to come to Jersey and use our JT Lab facilities as a European test hub.’

JT named ‘operator’ of the year in prestigious European fibre-to-the-home awards

JT picked up the ‘Operator Award’ at the 2013 Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) Council Europe Awards which were announced in London yesterday on Thursday 21 February.

The FTTH Council Europe is the leading FTTH industry body and the awards were announced at its 10th annual FTTH Conference, which brought together representatives from leading European telecoms providers, industry experts, investors, analysts and developers at London’s Excel.

JT was recognised for its Gigabit Jersey fibre-to-the-home programme, which was launched last year with the aim of making Jersey one of the most fibre-connected places in the world by 2016. Now in their second year, the awards are designed to identify one individual and one operator who have shown strong support for the FTTH Council Europe over the previous year and to reward enthusiasm and innovative approaches to FTTH deployment and services.

Karin Ahl, President of the FTTH Council Europe, said “We are very pleased to hand out the FTTH Council Europe Award to JT this year, because of the operator’s clear commitment to deploying FTTH and making it available to all homes and businesses in Jersey in the ‘Gigabit Isles’ programme.  It is very important for us to ensure that success stories such as JT’s receive proper recognition and are made visible to a wide audience of European broadband stakeholders, present here at the FTTH Conference in London. We thank JT for their contribution to FTTH adoption and wish them continued success.”

Graeme Millar, CEO of JT, was presented with the award at the closing plenary session on 21 February, he said:  “Receiving recognition from the FTTH Council Europe for our Gigabit Isles initiative is very welcome news, especially having just recently reached the first anniversary of our roll-out in Jersey. Our world-class project is designed to ensure connectivity for the Island’s future and in doing so we are also striving towards making the Channel Islands a digital hub for Europe, which will bring wider benefits for islanders and for the local economy. It is at this point that I must also thank the States of Jersey for their encouragement and support in helping us to realise this vision to deliver an FTTH Network and secure Jersey’s future connectivity, as well as helping JT move further towards fulfilling our vision to become the partner of choice for global telecoms innovation.”

Mr Millar was also a panel member for the FTTH Conference closing CEO plenary session, bringing together representatives from Europe’s leading telecoms organisations to provide a high-level strategic point of view on the future of the FTTH market in Europe and hot topics discussed included FTTH roll-out. Joining Mr Millar on the CEO panel were representatives from Portugal Telecom, Prysmian Group, Waoo!, Andorra Telecom and Turkcell Superonline. The moderator was Richard Jones, Partner at Ventura Team and author of books including ‘One Day MBA – Skills for Succeeding in Business Today.’

Mr Millar added: “Through our revolutionary five year ‘Gigabit Isles’ fibre programme, JT will provide every consumer and business on the Channel Island of Jersey with the ability to access speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second.  We’re enabling Islanders to take advantage of emerging technologies and advancements well ahead of many of their peers around the world.   An additional benefit has been the launch and creation of an innovative test bed concept we’ve marketed as “JT Lab”, which offers a unique opportunity for global technology businesses to access a commercially live ecosystem to trial new applications and services requiring gigabit-bandwidth.  Allowing companies the ability to test real products, on real customers, on a real fibre network, in real-time.  As well as offering both project management and engineering support.
